Top Ten Tuesday - 08 February 2011

Top Ten Tuesday is an weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Every week you list your ten choices for a weekly theme. I've grown very fond of this meme as one can really learn a lot from your fellow bloggers through reading their weekly lists! This week's theme is: Top Ten Characters You'll Name Your Children After! This one was a bit difficult for me as I assumed people would choose names based on the characters but I am very reluctant to do the same.

Let me explain.  Being that I am half Afrikaans (a language related to Dutch I suppose) I have experience in how cruel kids can be with teasing other kids about their names.  No no... my name is quite simple, but Afrikaans (and English I might mention) people have a tendency of really torturing their children with their names.  Afrikaans people, for example, are very fond of family names and will name their kids Susanna Petronella Jacoba Berandina Kleynhans after long dead relatives but the child will be called Sally.  That to me is just as cruel as English parents who find the weirdest names for their children (Apple, Leaf, Mellisandra etc).  No offense to those whose children have weird names, but parents often forget how cruel children are and how your child gets teased for that weird name.  Maybe you guys would like to debate the point.

So getting to the point, my choices are really based on the names I favour and not the characters, cause I really don't think my kid will appreciate being called Tamani (hehe)! So here we go, in no particular order, here are my Top Ten Characters I Would Name my Children After.  I am not including an explanation for each name but please bear in mind it has no relation to the character him/herself but really to the name, the way it sounds and how it will be shortened or twisted when used.

1.  Lucette(Luce) from Lost Voices

2.  Nathaniel (Nate) from the Vespertine

3. Clarissa (Clary) from the Mortal Instruments Series

4.  Ethan from the Castor Chronicles

5. & 6.  Darina and Phoenix from the Beautiful Dead Series

7.  Vaugh from Visions of Heat

8.  Damen from Evermore (or even Vampire Diaries series)

9.  Beth from Dark Lover

10. Tessa from Clockwork Angel

The only thing I can think of when I hear/read the name Nathaniel is that little bald comedian with the funny voice, like a gay Godfather :)

Damen and Ethan are nice though. I guess you'd have to think about the name and not the character, since some of these are kind of sex objects, hehe. Like, it would be a bit twisted if I named my kid Damen because I'd be thinking of hot Ian Somerhalder is (!).

I agree with you completely with names being a source of great discomfort with some kids, and I tried to limit my list to names I'd actually name my kids, but some names were too much fun to not throw in!

All of these sound lovely. I agree with you, having worked in schools since the 1970's....be cautious about naming your child something odd.

I am crazy about names. I'm long past the day when I am in need of names for actual offspring, but I still loving thinking about names.
